How to pitch music podcasts
Pitch a music podcast in one of two ways: as a guest with a specific angle for their audience, or as a music submission if the show features new tracks. Lead with the episode you are proposing, offer three talking points, link one track and one bio, and expect the host to decide on fit and scheduling.

Two different pitches, two different asks
A guest pitch is about the conversation: you are offering an episode, not a song. It needs an angle the host’s audience would find useful, three concrete things you can talk about, and a reason you specifically can speak to them. A music submission is about the track: the show plays new music and needs the metadata, a clean version and a link that works.
Most artists send the second when they want the first, which is why podcast pitches fail. If you want to talk about how you produced the record, the pitch should say so and offer the production story as the episode. If you only want airplay, say that plainly and keep it to two lines — hosts appreciate knowing which request it is.
- Guest pitch: angle, three talking points, availability, one link.
- Music pitch: track, genre, clean version, duration, one link.
- Both: a specific reference to a recent episode.
- Neither: a request to "come on and talk about my music".
Finding shows that actually take guests
Start from shows that have had independent artists as guests in the last few months. A show that only interviews established names is unlikely to change format for an unsolicited pitch, however good the angle. Look at the episode list, the host’s other work, and whether they publish a contact address or a guest form.
Size is less important than fit. A podcast with a small but specific audience — a genre scene, a production community, a regional music show — will often give you forty minutes of real conversation, which converts into clips, quotes and a relationship. A large general show may give you five minutes and no follow-up.
The guest pitch, in four lines
Line one: the episode you are proposing, in one sentence. Line two: why this host’s audience would care, referencing a recent episode. Line three: three things you can speak to concretely — the production process, the business side of a self-released record, touring a specific region. Line four: availability and one link to a previous interview or a track.
That is enough for a host to say yes or no without a meeting. Do not attach a press kit, do not send a list of every achievement, and do not propose a topic so broad ("the state of music") that it needs a producer to shape it. Specific is bookable. The press release template has the fact-list format that works for the same reason.
Preparing so the yes is easy
Before you pitch, decide what you will not talk about, check your audio setup and confirm you can record at a fixed time. Hosts remember the guest who arrived prepared with a microphone and a quiet room. Send a one-page summary of talking points and a headshot a week before, and confirm the recording link the day before.
After the episode is published, share it once, thank the host, and stay in touch with a genuine update rather than a request. Podcast appearances compound slowly: one good episode leads to a recommendation to another host, which is how most independent artists end up on several shows in a year. The same list-and-follow-up discipline as curator outreach applies, just with a longer lead time.

Worked example: five shows, one angle
An independent producer has a self-released EP and wants to talk about making it without a label. Five shows are chosen: two production-focused, two genre-scene shows, one regional music programme. Each pitch proposes the same episode, "making a four-track EP with no label and no studio", but changes the reference episode and the talking points to fit the show.
Two hosts reply, one books a recording three weeks out, one asks for the EP for a new-music segment. The other three are silent. The producer prepares four talking points, sends a headshot and a one-page summary, and records from a treated room. One episode becomes three clips and one written quote for press, which is a better return than a playlist add that disappears in a month.
- 1Listen to the most recent three episodes of each target show.
- 2Choose the shows that have had independent guests recently.
- 3Write the episode in one sentence and three talking points.
- 4Send five pitches with a show-specific reference and your availability.
- 5Prepare the recording setup and a one-page summary before the yes arrives.
The numbers in this example are arithmetic on the plan allowances, not observed results.
Podcast pitch checklist
Hosts book guests, not press releases.
- The show has had independent or emerging guests recently.
- The pitch names a specific recent episode.
- The proposed episode fits in one sentence.
- Three concrete talking points are offered.
- The ask is clear: a guest slot or a music submission.
- One link is included, not a folder of files.
- Availability and time zone are stated.
- A quiet recording setup and a one-page summary are ready.
What a podcast pitch will not do
It will not get you booked, and it will not guarantee that a published episode produces listeners or sales. Podcast audiences are loyal but small, and the value is often in the clips, the relationship and the credibility rather than an immediate spike.
It will not work with a generic pitch. Hosts receive pitches that could be sent to any show, and they can tell within a line. It also will not replace the release plan: an episode is one channel, and it needs the rest of the campaign around it to matter.
- No guaranteed booking, audience or download numbers.
- No promise that an appearance increases streams or listeners.
- No suggestion of paying for undisclosed guest placement.
Questions people ask
- How do I find music podcasts to pitch?
- Start from shows that have interviewed independent artists recently and cover your genre or a related craft topic. Listen to the last few episodes, note the host’s interests, and use the contact route or guest form they publish.
- Should I pitch myself as a guest or my music?
- Choose one. A guest pitch offers an episode with an angle and talking points; a music pitch offers a track with metadata and a clean version. Mixing the two makes the ask unclear and usually gets neither.
- How far in advance should I pitch a podcast?
- Four to eight weeks ahead for a guest slot, since many shows record in batches. A music submission can be closer to release, but the earlier the better if you want the episode to coincide with it.
- What if the host asks for a fee?
- Some shows charge for guest slots. Ask for the terms in writing and decide whether the audience is worth it. Do not present a paid appearance as editorial coverage or as independent validation.
