How Spotify monthly listeners are calculated

Updated 5 October 2026 · 2 min read

Spotify has never published the exact algorithm, but the rules it has documented are enough to predict how the number will behave. Once you know them, most of the surprises disappear.

The four rules that drive the number

Every published explanation of the metric comes back to the same four mechanics. Everything else is detail.

  • The window is 28 days and it rolls forward continuously, not monthly.
  • A play becomes a stream at 30 seconds, and only streams count.
  • Listeners are de-duplicated: one person contributes one listener, however much they play.
  • The count is recalculated repeatedly, so the same audience can produce a different number tomorrow.

Why de-duplication is the important part

If listeners were counted per stream, the metric would track consumption and a fan who replays a single could outweigh a hundred first-time listeners. De-duplication deliberately makes it a reach metric instead.

It also means the number cannot be inflated by replaying your own music. You are one listener. A thousand streams from one account is still one listener and a pattern the platform can see.

Where the data comes from

The public figure shown on an artist profile and the figures in Spotify for Artists come from the same listening data, but they are presented differently. Spotify for Artists breaks the audience down further — geography, source, and the segments it labels for artists — while the public profile shows a single total.

Third-party trackers such as Kworb, ChartMasters and spotifystats read and record the public figure over time, which is how listener history exists at all. Spotify does not publish a public historical series for every artist.

What this means for reporting

Because the metric is a rolling window of unique people, it is not additive with streams and it is not a monthly total. A campaign that runs for six weeks spans two different 28-day windows, and the listener peak it produces can appear before the campaign ends.

When you report on a promotion, quote the metric alongside the date and the source. A monthly listener figure without a date is not evidence of anything.

Frequently asked questions

Does Spotify count a stream at 30 seconds exactly?

Thirty seconds is the published threshold for a stream to register. Anything shorter is not counted as a stream, and therefore contributes nothing to the listener count.

Are monthly listeners per track or per artist?

The public figure is per artist. A listener who plays any of your tracks counts once towards your artist total.

Do programmed or algorithmic plays count?

They can, because they are plays. Spotify for Artists separates intentional listening from programmed listening in its own reporting, which is why its segment breakdown is a better quality signal than the headline number.

Can I see my own history?

Spotify for Artists shows your trend over time. To compare with others you need a third-party tracker, which is why they dominate this search.
