Growing monthly listeners without ads

Advertising can work, but it is not the only route and it is a poor first route for most independent releases. The channels that run on time instead of money are also the ones that build something that survives.
Curation before advertising
Playlist curators are the cheapest large-scale distribution available to an independent artist, and the price is a good pitch rather than money. Most published curator lists are free, and the ones that matter are reachable by email.
The work is finding the curators whose playlists actually match your sound, and writing to them like a person rather than blasting a link.
Radio and press compound
Community and college radio answer email more often than artists expect, and a play on a station is a credit you can cite in the next pitch. Regional press works the same way: one local feature gives the next outlet a reason to cover you.
Collaborate deliberately
A feature puts you in front of an audience that already trusts the other artist. One genuine collaboration with an artist one step ahead of you is often worth more than a month of posting.
Sequence it
Run the free channels in this order, because each one makes the next easier.
- Curators first — fastest to answer and fastest to move the number.
- Blogs and press second — slower, but their coverage strengthens later pitches.
- Radio third — needs a story, which the press hits provide.
- Collaborations in parallel, whenever the opportunity appears.
What you still need
Email deliverability and volume are the two things that stop artists doing this well. Sending hundreds of pitches from a personal Gmail address gets you filtered, and typing them one at a time does not scale.
Our plans include a managed sending mailbox and free email verification, so you can pitch at volume from a domain that lands, with invalid addresses removed before they cost you a bounce.
Frequently asked questions
Do Spotify ads increase monthly listeners?
They can, but a paid impression is not a recommendation, so the retention is usually weaker than organic coverage. Treat them as a supplement, not a foundation.
How many emails can I send safely?
It depends on your domain reputation and provider, which is why managed sending with health checks matters. Cold-volume sending from a fresh personal address is the fastest way to get filtered.
Is pitching curators free?
Yes. Curators do not charge to be pitched, and any service that claims to sell a guaranteed placement is not selling curation.
